Russian warship sank enemy ships in Barents Sea and a tanker in Baltic.

In air battle over North Sea, 11 United States of America Flying Fortresses heavy bombers destroyed or damaged 6 Luftwaffe Fw 190s.

Russian Front. Fierce fighting continued in Don bend near Stalingrad.

In Australasia. Admiral Nimitz announced, that on 17 August 1942 United States of America Marines raided Makin, in Gilbert islands and wrecked enemy seaplane base.

Eighth Air Force. At General Arnold's request, General Eisenhower gives General Spaatz additional duties as Air Officer for European Theatre of Operations, United States Army (ETOUSA) and head of the air section of its staff, thus assuring active participation by Eighth Air Force in theatre planning. 12 aeroplanes are dispatched to bomb shipyards at Rotterdam, but mission is aborted due to attack by 25 Me109 and Fw 190. Lack of proper coordination with Spitfire escort is major factor in failure of mission.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from 2 squadrons hit convoy South West of Crete, claiming 2 ships probably sunk. Fighters attack straggling B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and force it to crash land at sea.

Eleventh Air Force. 1 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers trying to fly reconnaissance over Kiska aborts due to weather.
