Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) fighters made intensive night attacks on railway targets in Northern France.

In India. Enemy raids in Calcutta area by day and night.

In Burma. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) and United States of America bombers raided Akyab and Rangoon .

Twelfth Air Force. Solid overcast prevents B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers from bombing Bizerte or alternate targets of Sousse and Sfax. P-40 fighters shoot up train in Kairouan and destroy trucks on Sfax-Faid road. F4U Corsair fighter continue reconnaissance between Bizerte and Gabes-Medenine area. C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft continue courier missions. British 5 Corps of First Army renews drive on Tunis. 2d Coldstream Guards attack Djebel el Ahmera (Longstop Hill) Northeast of Medjez el Bab.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers of 93d Group and The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Liberators are dispatched against harbour at Sousse. Only 2 heavy bombers reach target. Others are forced to return because of weather, but a few manage to bomb Monastir and railroads at Mahdia.

Tenth Air Force. Chine Air Task Force (CATF) aircraft bomb Lashio.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers pound Maimba mission and village near Buna when ground forces continue to resist stubbornly. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit ship in harbour at Arawe while a single 3-24 attacks a transport off Gasmata.

Ninth Air Force. 26 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers staging 42 through Midway from Hawaii bomb Wake Island during 22-23 December 1942.

Eleventh Air Force. All missions including a B-24 Liberator heavy bombers weather run cancelled due to weather.
