Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers carried out a major night time raid on Stuttgart and surrounding areas.

Russian Front. Battle of Stalingrad, The situation for the Wehrmacht attackers of Stalingrad seems desperate during the Russian counter-attack Operation Uranus, and General Friedrich Paulus sends Adolf Hitler a telegram saying that the German 6. Armee is surrounded. Soviet troops had advanced 40 to 50 miles and taken 13,000 Wehrmacht prisoners.

In Burma. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) and United States of America bombers raided Akyab, Magwe and Mandalay.

Eighth Air Force. 11 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers attack Lorient-Keroma 17 U-boat base.

Twelfth Air Force. United States heavy bombers based at Algiers move back to Tafaraoui because of enemy bombing raids on Maison Blanche airfield. P-38 Lightning fighters of 14th Group move into Youks-les-Bains airfield.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40s patrol over Derna area.

Tenth Air Force. 6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers inflict heavy damage on railroad centre at Mandalay.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers pound trails around Sanananda while B-26 Marauder medium bombers hit Buna area. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit airfields at Lae and barges between Lae and Salamaua, and attack warships 68 miles Southwest of Arawe and elsewhere in the Solomon Sea.

South Pacific (SOPAC). The critical lack of aircraft repair and maintenance facilities is alleviated somewhat by the arrival of the 13th Air Depot and the 6th and 29th Service Groups. The units are based on New Caledonia and Espiritu Santo.

Eleventh Air Force. 1 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers flies reconnaissance over Kiska, Attu, and Agattu. Bombers and fighters are alerted for 23 November 1942 mission to find and destroy a reported 5-vessel convoy.
