Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers carried out a major bombing raid on Genoa by moonlight.

Russian Front. No fresh ground was gained by the Wehrmacht ground forces at Stalingrad. The Wehrmacht ground forces attempt to land on island in Lake Ladoga routed by intense Russian defenders.

In Africa. Allied air offensive continued against enemy supply columns.

In Australasia. In New Guinea the Australians advanced on Kokoda.

Twelfth Air Force. First echelon of Headquarters begins move from United Kingdom to North Africa.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). Advance United States Air Headquarters, previously attached to The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Advanced Air Headquarters, Western Desert, to gain field experience, becomes Headquarters of Desert Air Task Force (DATF), located at Burg el Arab, with General Brereton as Commanding General and General Adler attached with advance Headquarters of Air Service Command. Chiefs of Staff of Desert Air Task Force (DATF) is General Strickland. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb dispersed aircraft. P-40 fighters escort bombers, attack tent areas and motor transport along coastal road near El Hammam, fly reconnaissance and fighters sweeps West of El Daba, and bomb artillery positions. P-40 fighters claim 2 fighters destroyed. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers sent to hit Candia abort because of weather.

South Pacific (SOPAC). Henderson Field is out of operation again as result of enemy action.

Eleventh Air Force. Weather reconnaissance aircraft reports submarine at 52-08N 177-21W. Navy aeroplane later makes contact and drops depth bomb. Result unknown.
