Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers made extensive daylight attacks on power stations and industrial buildings in Lille-Lens and surrounding area.

Russian Front. Bitter hand-to-hand fighting continues inside Stalingrad, in the main battle on the North West of the city the Russians were on the offensive against the Wehrmacht ground forces.

In Africa. United States of America heavy bombers attacked Benghazi during a dusk raid. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers and Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) carried out an intensive raid on Tobruk.

In Australasia. Allied air force kept up raids on enemy installations at Buna. Kokoda and Rabaul.

Twelfth Air Force. General Cannon takes command of XII Ground Air Support Command.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb shipping in Bengasi harbour. Direct hits are made on 1 large vessel while a smaller vessel and other targets receive lesser hits.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers bomb and strafe occupied areas at Menari, Efogi, Nauro, Yodda, and Kokoda. P-40 fighters strafe antiaircraft positions, huts, and barges at Buna and Salamaua and bomb and strafe Wairopi bridge, strafe buildings at Yodda, airfield at Buna, and antiaircraft positions and other targets along Buna-Kokoda trail. 1 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bombs North end of Buna airfield and coastal end of Sanananda track. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb airfields and shipping at Rabaul.

Eleventh Air Force. 9 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 2 B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, and 1 LB-30 bomber, accompanied by 15 P-39 fighters and 20 P-40 fighters, abort Kiska bombing mission due to weather. Photo reconnaissance suggests that Chichagof Harbour is abandoned.
