Events On This Day

In the Mediterranean. It was announced that an extremely large convoy had reached Malta without being attacked.

In the Pacific. The United States of America heavy bombers carried out a raid on Japanese occupied Wake Island.

Army Air Force. Committee of Operations Analysts, in process of formulating a basis for target selection, presents an interim report stating principle of concentration of bombardment against a few essential industries or services.

Twelfth Air Force. Total cloud cover causes B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, escorted by P-38 Lightning fighters, to abort bombing mission against Tunis and Bizerte airfields. Spitfires fly routine patrol over Oran-Tafaraoui area. C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft fly courier missions. Elements of United States 1st Division, after relieving 2d Coldstream Guards on Djebel el Ahmera, are forced to withdraw by Afrika Corps counter-attack.

Ninth Air Force. 324th Fighter Group arrives in Egypt to join Ninth Air Force.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers strafe troops near Gona and at Woiba Island. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Cape Gloucester airfield, and at tack ship at Pilelo Island. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers carry out single-bomber attacks on transport West South West of Cape Orford, a vessel North West of Lorengau, a cargo ship at Arawe, and the Cape Gloucester airfield.
