Events On This Day

Russian Front, Moscow reported a Soviet advance of 65 miles on a seventy mile front between Moscow and Lake Ilmen.

Far East, Japanese forces landed on Kieta, one of the Solomon Islands. Imperial troops made a further withdrawal in Malaya. In air battles over Rangoon at least 21 Japanese planes were shot down,. Attacks on American and Filipino forces in Luzon repulsed. The Dutch announced that their bombers made twelve direct hits on four enemy warships and four transports in Macassar Strait.

In Africa, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's forces reoccupied Jedabia.

Hawaiian Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers of Task group 8.9 return from Nandi to Canton Island.

Zone of Interior. Flying Training Command is established and given jurisdiction over the Southeast Gulf Coast and West Coast Flying Training Centres which had been established on 8 July 40.
