United States of America Flying Fortresses heavy bombers carried out an intensive raid on shipyards at Le Trait, near Rouen. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers carried out a night raid on Frankfurt and Wiesbaden.

Russian Front. The Wehrmacht drove wedge into defences at Kotelnikovo.

Mr. Churchill arrived in London from his visit to Moscow.

Eighth Air Force. 12 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers hit the shipyard of Ateliers et Chantiers Maritime de la Seine at Le Trait. General Spaatz reports The British Royal Air Force (RAF) attitude towards United States daylight precision bombing seems to be changing from one of scepticism to one of tentative approval.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF).United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack Tobruk harbour.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit town of Gasmata and airfields at Rabaul. Japanese amphibious forces leave Buna in barges and New Ireland in transports, heading for Milne Bay. Barges are detected by Australian Coast watcher during the afternoon.

South Pacific (SOPAC). In the Battle of the Eastern Solomons, 7 B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and United States Navy (USN) dive and torpedo bombers from the Enterprise and Saratoga attack a Task Force covering a transport formation heading for Guadalcanal Navy aeroplanes sink the carrier Ryujo. During the night 4 warships shell the airstrip on Guadalcanal.

Eleventh Air Force. 404th Bomber Squadron begins to operate from Umnak. Photo reconnaissance sortie is cancelled due to overcast.

Zone of Interior. XII Fighter Command is assigned to Twelfth Air Force.
