Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Spitfires made an offensive sweep over North France. Mines laid at night in enemy waters.

Russian Front, Moscow reported important victory over 16. Armee near Staraya Russa.

Far East, In Burma, Imperial Forces fell back to the west bank of the Sittang River. An enemy submarine shelled oil refineries on Californian coast. Japanese raided Java airfields. News received of fresh landing by Japanese near Koepang, capital of Dutch Timor. Japanese planes raided Port Blair on the Andaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal.

Luftwaffe night raid on East. Anglian coast town England.

Fifth Air Force. Heavy bomber units begin evacuating Java.

Zone of Interior. Reports of unidentified air planes approaching Los Angeles from the ocean during 24-25 February 1942 result in Battle of Los Angeles in which some 1,400 rounds of 3 in antiaircraft ammunition is fired against various targets. Later the Army will conclude that the battle had been touched off by 1 to 5 unidentified aircraft, but the Navy will maintain there was no reason for the firing.
