Events On This Day

Russian Front. Russians still fighting offensive engagements round Kharkov. The Wehrmacht ground forces continued attacks at Barvenkovo however were repelled.

In Africa. Martuba, Tmimi and Benghazi bombed by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers during night.

In China. Heavy fighting in Chekiang.

In Australasia. Allied bombers raided Vunakanan aerodrome, Southeast of Rabaul.

Broadcast from Germany announced execution of 14 German Communists in Mannheim.

Eighth Air Force. VIII A fighter-bomber C, under overall logistical control of Service of Supply, is given primary responsibility for all supply and maintenance peculiar to Army Air Forces, thus leaving much logistical autonomy to Army Air Force in Britain (AAFIB).

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers attack Lae airfield but heavy antiaircraft and at least 15 intercepting Zeros prevent accurate bombing. Several of the medium bombers are shot down or badly damaged and forced to crash land.

Zone of Interior. Deployment of air units from eastern United States is begun as a result of threat of a naval attack on the West coast. 12th Bomber Group begins movement from La to Calif.
