Events On This Day

Russian Front. The Wehrmacht ground forces made further progress towards Stalingrad.

In Africa. New Zealand troops made successful raid on centre sector of El Alamein front.

In Australasia. United States of America Navy Department. Announced sea battle in Solomon Islands, in which two Japanese aircraft carriers were damaged

Duke of Kent killed in aircraft accident while flying to Iceland.

Eighth Air Force. Units of Provisional Troop Carrier Command, organised in United Kingdom on 31 July 1942 pending arrival of VIII Troop Carrier Command, are transferred to VIII Ground Air Support Command (GASC) after plans to organise VIII Troop Carrier Command have been abandoned.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb shipping and landing grounds. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack Corinth Canal.

Fifth Air Force. Amphibious forces bound for Milne Bay from Buna are stranded on Goodenough Island when P-40 fighters from Milne Bay destroy all of their beached barges. P-40 fighters also attack a convoy proceeding from New Ireland toward Milne Bay but are hampered by bad weather and fail to halt landings at 3 points East of Rabi during 25-26 August 1942. P-400 fighters hit airfields and antiaircraft positions at Buna.

South Pacific (SOPAC). The invasion force sailing toward Guadalcanal 24 August 1942 is hit hard by Marine dive bombers 125 miles from the island at 0835. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers from Espiritu Santo sink the destroyer Mutsuki as it is attempting to sink the damaged transport Kinyru Maru. By noon the force is heading North in retreat. The enemy has lost about 90 aircraft in the battle.

Eleventh Air Force. Photo reconnaissance aeroplane flies over Kiska, Attu, and Adak, then turns back because of mechanical failure.
