Events On This Day

North Africa. Extremely heavy fighting, involving advance units of the Guards, for hill Northeast of Mediez-el-Bab.

In Libya. Eighth Army occupied Sirte.

In Australasia. United States of America Flying Fortresses bombers from Guadalcanal bombed shipping at Rabaul and surrounding areas causing considerable damage.

General Henri Giraud. La Chapelle was executed by firing squad on 26 December 1942.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters bomb troop concentration at Sfax. P-38 Lightning fighters sent to bomb convoy off North Tunisia fail to sight ships. Afrika Corps retake Djebel el Ahmera.

Fifth Air Force. A United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers attacks sub in Wide Bay off New Britain; 1 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack runways at Cape Gloucester and another bombs Lae.

Eleventh Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-24 takes photos of Kiska and Attu and unsuccessfully bombs 6 barges between Gertrude Cove and Kiska Harbour. The B-24 Liberator heavy bombers then sights 8 float Zeros. 3 unsuccessfully attempt to attack the heavy bomber.
