Events On This Day

Russian Front. Moscow announced the recapture of Netidovo, on the railway line from Rjev to Veliki Luki. The Wehrmacht defences around Rjev breached.

In the Mediterranean. The British Air Ministry announced that British Royal Air Force (RAF) and Navy aircraft had carried out a 24-hour attack on an enemy convoy in which a 20,000 ton liner was hit and believed sunk, a cruiser, destroyer and two merchant ships were damaged and a battleship probably hit.

In Africa. Tank battle still raging in the neighbourhood of Antelat, 50 miles Northeast of Jedabia.

Far East. First communique issued from General Wavell's Pacific Headquarters announced that during a 48-hour attack on the enemy convoy in Macassar Strait three ships were destroyed, four others probably sunk and 12 damaged out of the Japanese armada engaged in landing forces at the oil port of Balik Papan, in Dutch Borneo. In the Philippines, General MacArthur launched a heavy counter-attack on Japanese troops in a Batan peninsula, scoring a smashing success. A British communique from Burma announced that large Chinese reinforcements were pouring into Burma.

In Malaya. British troops retained their positions.

Bombs were dropped by Luftwaffe raiders on South West coast at night. One Luftwaffe bomber destroyed.

Far East Air Force (FEAF). The first Army Air Forces Pursuit Squadron (17th Pursuit Squadron), (Provisional) under Major Charles A Sprague, arrives in Java with 13 P-40 fighters flown from Australia.

Hawaiian Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers of Task group 8.9 fly from Canton Island to Nandi.
