Events On This Day

More than 1,000 British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers carried out intensive bombing raids in and around Bremen.

Russian Front. Russians evacuated Kupiansk, Southeast of Kharkov.

In the Mediterranean. Our submarines torpedoed three supply ships,.

In Africa. Erwin Rommel's main forces advanced on Matruh.

In Burma. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers raided Akyab.

In Australasia. Japanese fighters intercepted over Port Moresby.

Major-General. Eisenhower, commander of United States of America Forces in European Theatre, in London. Arnold-Portal-Towers agreement concerning air forces for BOLERO is approved by Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Eighth Air Force. Headquarters is established at Bushy Park, a London suburb United Kingdom.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Salamaua.

Seventh Air Force. General Lynd becomes Commanding General VII Bomber Command.

Eleventh Air Force. A field order bases the 404th Bomber Squadron at Fairbanks, to operate out of Nome, to which 1 Squadron of the 54th Fighter Group is also sent. Another Squadron of the 54th (P-39 fighters) is sent to Fort Richardson. 2 B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, 4 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and 1 LB-30 bomber fly bombing and weather missions over Kiska, bombing North side of the harbour.
