Events On This Day

The American Air Force pilots took part for first time in fighter sweeps over Northern France. An immense force of British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers raided Hamburg during the night.

Russian Front. Fighting continued in area of Voronezh, Tsimlyanskaya, Novocherkassk and Rostov.

In Africa. Land operations again limited. Allied bombers made heavy raid on Tobruk.

In Australasia. Patrols engaged Japanese at Awala, inland from Gona. Japanese aircraft raided Darwin.

Eighth Air Force. Lieutenant Colonel Albert P Clark, Executive Officer of 31st Fighter Group, is shot down while flying an The British Royal Air Force (RAF) fighters on a sweep over France, thus becoming the first Eighth Air Force fighters pilot to be shot down in European Theatre of Operations. He survives and is taken prisoner by the Germans.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). During 25-26 July 1942, B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb harbour at Tobruk.

Fifth Air Force. A United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers strike against Gasmata is repulsed by fighters interception. B-26 Marauder medium bombers attack destroyer Gona but fail to score hits. Australian troops flown into Kokoda fail to halt Japanese advance and Kokoda is evacuated.
