Events On This Day

Russian Front. Heavy fighting in Kharkov and Sevastopol sectors.

In Africa. Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's Afrika Corps forces were reported to be 15 miles from Matruh.

Eighth Air Force. Air echelons of 31st Fighter Group are established at Atcham and High Ercall by this date. These are first combat personnel of VIII Fighter Command to reach United Kingdom. HALPRO B-24 Liberator heavy bombers fly a diversion for The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Albacore attack on 2 merchant vessels at Tobruk.

Tenth Air Force. General Naiden becomes Commanding General Tenth Air Force, succeeding general Brereton who departs for Middle East with General Adler, Commanding General X Air Service Command , and several other key subordinates. Aircraft and crews of 9th Bomber Squadron follow. This move leaves the Tenth Air Force almost a skeleton.

Seventh Air Force. 3 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) LB-30 bombers bomb installations on Wake Island. The raid takes place during 26-27 June 1942 and is staged through Midway.

Eleventh Air Force. 5 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers drop incendiaries and fire bombs on Kiska Harbour installations.
