Events On This Day

North Africa. Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's Afrika Corps was driven from Medjez-el-Bab, 30 miles South West of Tunis.

In the Mediterranean. Allied bombers attacked aerodromes in Sicily.

Russian Front. Red Army in Don bend took 12,000 more Wehrmacht prisoners.

In Siam. United States of America heavy bombers made first attack on oil refinery at Bangkok.

In Australasia. United States of America Flying Fortresses heavy bombers carried out a raid on Japanese aerodrome near Buin.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers fly 3 missions against Tripoli, scoring direct hits on 2 vessels. 1 heavy bomber bombs ship at Homs harbour. P-40s patrol over Bengasi and Derna area.

Fifth Air Force. United States and Australian ground forces carry out limited attacks on Buna front, making little progress. In an effort to break Japanese air superiority over Buna, Fifth Air Force P-40s, A-20 Havoc light bombers, and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers pound airfield and antiaircraft positions in the area B-26 Marauder medium bombers strike Salamaua area.

Eleventh Air Force. A United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers reconnoitring Holtz Bay harbour spots shipping targets which are subsequently hit by 4 B-26 Marauder medium bombers escorted by 4 P-38 Lightning fighters. 1 large vessel is claimed afire and sinking. Reconnaissance is flown over Rat Island, Kiska shipping, Agattu, Semichi and North coast of Attu. 2 P-38 Lightning fighters and 1 B-26 Marauder medium bombers sustain minor damage.
