The British Royal Air Force Boston's with strong fighter escort carried out bombing raid on Abbeville. Royal Air Force Hurricane bombers hit for ships of Dieppe. United States of America Flying Fortresses bombed shipyards at Rotterdam. The British Royal Air Force carried out massive night-time raids against Cassel and Gdynia. 30 bombers missing.

Russian Front. Bitter fighting in the outskirts of Rzhev. The Wehrmacht thrusts in area of Southern Volga slowed down.

In Australasia. Japanese fleet attempting to retake the Solomon islands, withdrew United States of America naval planes sank one Japanese destroyer; probably sank another, left a third burning;

Lord Moyne appointed Deputy Minister of State as Cairo.

Eighth Air Force.7 heavy bombers attack Wilton shipyards on outskirts of Rotterdam. These yards, the most modern in the Netherlands, are fully employed by the Germans for servicing vessels. 92d Bomber Group completes nonstop flight of the last of its 4 sqs from Newfoundland to United Kingdom without a loss. A Combat Crew Replacement Center (CCRC), the first in Eighth Air Force, is established at Bovingdon.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb a convoy, hitting 1 merchant ship which is reported sinking.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers and P-400 fighters bomb airfields at Buna while P-40 fighters strafe beachhead and fuel dumps at Milne Bay.

Eleventh Air Force. 4 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, 6 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, and 2 P-38 Lightning fighters fly weather, reconnaissance and patrol missions over Kiska and Atka. Enemy begins to transfer Attu garrison to Kiska, which is completed on 16 September 1942.
