Events On This Day

The British Admiralty announced loss of HMS Barham by U-331 on 25 November 1941 after being hit with three torpedoes in the Mediterranean. HMS Barham was also hit on 28 December 1939 by U-30 whilst in the Atlantic.

Russian Front, Moscow announced that Red Army troops on the Kalinin front were vigorously advancing.

In Africa, Tremendous attack by Allied air forces played havoc with Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's Afrika Corps armoured columns.

Far East, More Japanese landings in Malaya. In Burma the British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers blew up the Kawkareik-Myawaddi road east of Moulmein. British garrison at Mergui evacuated. Batavia reported Japanese air raids on Macassar, Pontianak, Belawan, Padang, Parepare, Tanjong Pinang, Riouw Archipelago, and Amboyna. Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) bombers sank three Japanese ships in Rabaul harbour. Chinese forces reported nearing Kowloon. Japanese ships hit in Macassar Strait now reported to include 11 warships and 17 transports sunk or badly damaged. United States Navy Department announced that Midway Island was still holding out.

Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill reviewed the war situation in the House of Commons.

Canada announced that she would send Britain as an outright gift £225,000,000 worth of munitions and food.

Hawaiian Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers of Task group 8.9 return to Canton Island.
