Events On This Day

United States of America and The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Mustangs and Spitfires attacked railway and water transport targets in France and Low Countries.

North Africa. First Army entered Tebourba, 15 miles from Tunis.

In the Mediterranean. United States of America aircraft attacked docks at Leros, Dodecanese.

Russian Front. Soviet counteroffensives continued round and in Stalingrad against the Wehrmacht ground forces.

In China. United States of America heavy bombers attacked Japanese surface shipping and aircraft at Canton.

German troops entered Toulon, French warships scuttled by order of Admiral Jean de Laborde.

Admiral de Laborde orders French fleet at Toulon scuttled to prevent it from falling into German hands.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb Portolago Bay, hitting 2 vessels.

Tenth Air Force. 10 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and more than 20 P-40s, the largest Chine Air Task Force (CATF) effort in China to date, hit shipping and harbour installations at Hong Kong, firing warehouses and claiming 2 freighters and numerous barges sunk. A large force of fighters intercept during the return trip but are driven of by the escort. The P-40s and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers claim several aeroplanes shot down.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers pound Buna area, hitting buildings, airfield, and other targets, as Allied ground forces prepare to renew attacks in the Buna-Gona area.

Eleventh Air Force. Photo reconnaissance covers Kiska, Amchitka and Attu. Ship attacked in Holtz Bay on previous day is observed lower in water and still burning.
