Events On This Day

North Africa. Tunis and Susa bombed by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) bomber aircraft from Libya.

Russian. Front. Soviet troops occupied Chertkovo on Middle Don front.

In Australasia. Japanese surface warships off New Guinea bombarded Buna village.

French Somaliland adhered to United Nations as part of fighting France.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb dock and harbour installations at Sousse. P-38 Lightning fighters provide escort. P-38 Lightning fighters and P-40 fighters on patrol and reconnaissance missions claim 4 aeroplanes downed in combat and several vehicles destroyed at various points in Tunisia. C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft, some escorted by Spitfires, continue courier and ferry missions. F4U Corsair fighter fly reconnaissance over Tunis, Sousse and Sfax areas, and Spitfires patrol Oran and Bone areas.

Ninth Air Force. During 27-28 December 1942 and during day, B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, including The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Liberators under IX Bomber Command control, bomb harbour at Sousse, hitting vessels and dock installations. British Army patrols reach point East of Buerat, overlooking Wadi el Chebir, without opposition.

Tenth Air Force. Chine Air Task Force (CATF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, with fighters support, hit Magwe.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Rabaul, Gasmata and Lae.

Eleventh Air Force. Icing conditions and low visibility prevent all flying.
