Events On This Day

Russian warships sank three transports in Bay of Finland.

Hamburg again raided by strong force of British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers.

Russian Front. Fierce fighting in areas of Voronezh, Tsimlyanskaya and Bataisk. Soviet High Command admits Rostov fall to the Wehrmacht ground forces.

In Africa. Reduced activity on land.

In the Mediterranean. Heavy bombers of Allied air forces raided Suda Bay, Crete.

In Burma. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers attacked Akyab docks and Mandalay Rangoon

Nine Luftwaffe raiders destroyed in raids on Birmingham and elsewhere in Britain.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit Tobruk during 27-28 July 1942, while B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack convoy in Mediterranean, claiming hits on 2 merchant ships.

Eighth Air Force. Headquarters VIII Fighter Command opens at Bushey Hall following move from temporary Headquarters at High Wycombe. General Hunter, designated Commanding General VIII Fighter Command on 14 May 1942 in United States, assumes command in England. General Candee, Commanding General VIII Ground Air Support Command (GASC), announces staff assignments and begins organisation of his command in United Kingdom.

Fifth Air Force. 1 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers bombs installations at Gona. General Kenney, commander designate of Allied Air Force, arrives in Australia.

Eleventh Air Force. Air coverage survey for Army ground operations to Adak and Tanaga Island is flown. Weather cancels bombing mission to Kiska.
