Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers carry out a massive raid against the submarine base at. St. Nazaire during the night.

Russian Front. The Wehrmacht ground forces started offensive in Kursk area, l00 miles North of Kharkov.

In Africa. Heavy fighting continued round Mersa Matruh.

In Australasia. Allied land forces made a raid on the Japanese garrison at Salamaua, New Guinea.

European Theatre of Operations, United States Army (ETOUSA). General Eisenhower assumes command of European Theatre of Operations, United States Army (ETOUSA), succeeding General Chaney.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). General Brereton arrives at Cairo where United States Army Forces in the Middle East United States Army Forces in the Middle East (USAFIME) issues orders placing him in command of United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF), which is activated immediately. United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF) is comprised of Halverson Detachment (HALPRO), Brereton detachment (9th Bomber Squadron and other personnel which Brereton brought from India), and Air Section of United States Military North African Mission. Also activated is Air Service Command, United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF), under General Adler. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers of HALPRO bomb harbour and shipping at Tobruk.

Eleventh Air Force. A United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers weather aircraft flies over Kiska. Solid weather front cancels bombing. On this and the following day United States advance reconnaissance parties land on Adak from submarines.
