Events On This Day

Russian Front. On the North West outskirts of Stalingrad superior Wehrmacht ground forces made a tank penetration in one sector.

In Africa. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers again launched an intensive bombing raid on Tobruk.

In China. United States of America bombers carried out major raids on Japanese installations on the China-Burma border.

In Australasia. Twenty-three out of 25 Japanese bombers were shot down over Guadalcanal, making a total of 42 Japanese aircraft being destroyed in four days by United States of America planes without loss.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters and P-400 fighters bomb and strafe Wairopi bridge, village of Kagi, Myola Lake area, and targets along Buna-Kokoda trail. 1 B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bombs airfield at Lae. Main body of 126th Infantry, United States 32d Division, arrives at Port Moresby and is assigned to New Guinea Force to join Australian advance on Wairopi.

Eleventh Air Force. 2 bombing missions are flown to Kiska and Attu by 7 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 1 B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, and 1 LB-30 bomber, escorted by 17 fighters. Installations on Kiska and a freighter nearby are bombed. 1 of the B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and the LB-30 bombers bomb village and Chichagof Harbour on Attu and on returning silence antiaircraft guns on a freighter. 5 float-planes are shot down, and 1 submarine is sunk. 1 P-39 fighters is shot down.
