In the Philippines, On Mindanao the Japanese reinforcements from Cebu land on the west coast, at Cotabato and Parang, and capture both. One regiment and two Filipino battalions fight bravely but are unable to prevent the two bridgeheads from joining up. The Japanese, who had already landed at Davao, advance North Westwards towards Bugo. The Japanese have highly effective air support. On Luzon the shelling and bombing of the fortified island of Corregidor is intensified.

New Guinea, The Japanese, who are considering the invasion of Australia, make arrangements for the invasion of the capital of Papua, Port Moresby (the landing is codenamed Operation Mo).

In Burma, The Japanese seize Lashio, the terminus of the Burma Road by which supplies are dispatched to China. China is thus completely cut off and from now on can only be supplied by air. The Chinese 200th Division reaches Loilem, but then turns round and marches towards the Chinese frontier. General Alexander decides to set up a new defensive line between Kalewa, Katha, Bhamo and Hsenwi, all available troops will begin to fall back on to this line on 2 May 1942.

In the Middle East, General Auchinleck issues instructions on the tasks that will fall to the Br 9th and 10th armies in case of a German attack across Anatolie. There is a real fear that the Germans will carry out an enormous pincer movement from Russia to the Mediterranean.

The Luftwaffe carry out extensive bombing raids on Norwich during the night.

Adolf Hitler and Mussolini meet at Salzburg. The two allies review the situation which although not catastrophic, is hardly rosy. Adolf Hitler is obsessed with the Eastern front, Adolf Hitler seems quite changed, thoughtful and preoccupied yet as Count Ciano, the Italian foreign minister, emphasises he has lost none of this verbosity, which he demonstrates in a monologue lasting one hour 40 minutes.

Tenth Air Force. Rangoon is again hit by a flight of heavy bombers which pound dock area.
