Events On This Day

The British Admiralty announced the sinking by submarine of three Axis supply ships and a tanker in Mediterranean.

The British Royal Air Force Boston bombers carried out extensive attacks on the docks at Ostend and power stations in Lille-Lens area. United States of America Flying Fortresses carried out raids on aerodrome near Courtrai. Russian bombers carried out attacks on the following German cities Berlin, Königsberg , Danzig, Stettin.

Russian Front. Further Russian counter-attacks North West of Stalingrad and in Kletskaya area.

In Africa. British warships and aircraft bombarded Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's tank repair shops and store dumps at El Daba.

In Australasia. Allies now hold six main islands of Solomon Japanese aeroplanes raided American positions on Guadalcanal but were repulsed with loss of seven. United States of America Flying Fortresses made heavy night attack on aerodrome at Buka.

In China. Recapture by Chinese of air base at Lishui in Chekiang announced.

Eighth Air Force. 12 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers attack Courtrai and Wevelghem airfields, an Fw 190 base.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers fail to locate shipping near Crete and return without bombing. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb landing ground during 29-30 August 1942.

Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers pound Lashio, scoring numerous hits on the airport and starting 3 large fires in warehouse area Southeast of the city.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers and P-400 fighters hit airfields at Buna. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers pound airfield at Rabaul, and P-40 fighters hit facilities in Milne Ray area as enemy ground forces continue drive over the Owen Stanley Range toward Port Moresby.

Eleventh Air Force. A Navy Catalina reports force of 3 cruisers and 4 destroyed North West of Umnak. Thereupon all aircraft of the Eleventh go on attack alert. Surface force then identifies itself as friendly.
