Events On This Day

North Africa. It was announced that our troops had being forced to withdraw from hills Northeast of Medjez-el-Bab due to incredibly fierce enemy activity.

Russian Front. Kotelnikovo, on Stalingrad-Novorossiysk railway, captured by Russians from the Wehrmacht ground forces.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers attack Sousse docks and harbour; P-38 Lightning fighters provide escort. DB-7 Douglas Boston light bombers and A-20 Havoc light bombers hit bridges at La Hencha; escorting P-40 fighters strafe flatcars and locomotive at Sainte-Juliette. P-38 Lightning fighters attack tank depot Southeast of Pont-du-Fahs, DB-7 Douglas Boston light bombers and A-20 Havoc light bombers follow with attack on same target. P-38 Lightning fighters and P-40 fighters fly reconnaissance missions and patrols over wide areas of Algeria and Tunisia. C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft continue transport missions throughout North West Africa.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers sent to bomb Tunis harbour during 29-30 December 1942 find target obscured by clouds and attack Sousse instead.

Tenth Air Force. 12 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack shipping in Rangoon vicinity.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers strafe forces and occupied areas at Lokanu and along West bank of Amboga River. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers carry out single-bomber attacks on airfields at Lae and Gasmata.

Eleventh Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers flies negative reconnaissance over Rat Island and Amchitka. Scheduled Kiska attack and Amchitka reconnaissance missions are cancelled by bad weather.
