Extremely strong force of British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers raided Bremen and surrounding area.

Russian Front. The Wehrmacht carried out heavy panzer attacks, repelled at Kursk. The Wehrmacht 11. Armee under Erich von Manstein takes Sevastopol, although fighting rages until 9 July 1942.

In Africa. Mersa Matruh evacuated by our troops. Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's Afrika Korps takes Matruh.

Eighth Air Force. Captain Charles C Kegelman (Commanding Officer 15th Bomber Squadron), flying on mission with 12 The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Bostons against Hazebrouck marshalling yard, becomes first member of Eighth Air Force to drop bombs on enemy occupied Europe. First pilot fatality of Eighth Air Force in European Theatre of Operations is suffered when 1st Lieutenant Alfred W Giacomini of 31st Fighter Group crashes a Spitfire while landing at Atcham.

Tenth Air Force. Colonel Robert C Oliver assumes command of X Air Service Command.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit airfields at Rabaul and Lae during 28-29 June 1942.
