Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers again carried out extensive raids on Turin and the surrounding areas.

In Africa. Allied forces occupied Djedaida, Northeast of Tebourba, in Tunisia.

In Libya. United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) made daylight raids on Tripoli.

Russian Front. Soviet troops broke Wehrmacht ground forces lines on the East bank of Don.

United States of America. Announced that Japanese had reoccupied Attu in the Aleutians.

Twelfth Air Force. British First Army, after taking Tebourba on 27 November 1942, is stalled It Djedeida. In an effort to rejuvenate the drive on Tunis, elements of British 1st Parachute Brigade are dropped at Depienne by Twelfth Air Force C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft, but the objective of capturing Oudna airfield and threatening Tunis 10 miles to the North fails because of overwhelming defence of the airfield. Over 300 casualties are suffered by the paratroops. P-38 Lightning fighters and DB-7 Douglas Boston light bombers attack Gabes airfield while other United States fighters operate with The British Royal Air Force (RAF) out of Bone, furnishing air cover for ground units in battle area.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Tripoli harbour at dusk, hitting docks, warehouses, 2 vessels, and silencing an antiaircraft battery.

Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Hongay and Campho on Indochina coast.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, P-40s, and A-20 Havoc light bombers pound Gona area while B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and a single A-20 Havoc light bombers bomb airfields at Lae. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers intercept force of 4 troop-carrying destroyers proceeding through Vitiaz Strait without air cover. The heavy bombers damage 2 vessels and cause the others to turn back, thus preventing reinforcement of Gona with fresh troops from Rabaul.

Eleventh Air Force. A United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers over Holtz Bay reports vessel bombed and damaged on 26 November 1942 as still sinking. 1 B-26 Marauder medium bombers flies uneventful reconnaissance over South shore of Kiska.
