Events On This Day

In the Mediterranean. Allied heavy air force bombers raided Crete.

In Egypt. New counter-attacks by the Afrika Corps in the northern sector of the British XXX Corps. Bernard Law Montgomery, acknowledging that the bulk of the Afrika Corps forces are focused in the north, chooses to try to break through, not westwards along the coast, but southwards, in the sector manned by the already exhausted Italian infantry.

Russian Front. The Wehrmacht ground forces continued to attack areas within Stalingrad however their attacks were held by the Russian defenders. Fierce fighting around Nalchik.

United States of America. Mr Stimson announced the Alaskan highway was open for its entire length.

A 1943 production objective of 107,000 aeroplanes is given top priority by Roosevelt in his instructions to Donald M Nelson, Chairman of War Production Board.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers strike Maleme airfield. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb landing grounds, motor transports, and tanks. P-40 fighters fly escort, then bomb and strafe road East of El Daba, and attack troop concentration and vehicles. In view of strong Afrika Corps reinforcements on his North flank near coast, General Montgomery alters breakout plan. Instead of pushing West along coast, he decides to shift point of Advanta South in order to attack against Italian troops.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers hit Isurava-Deniki and Abuari-Kaile trails. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers attack shipping in Bougainville Strait between Buin and Faisi.

Eleventh Air Force. Japanese reoccupy Attu. Special reconnaissance flown with General Buckner, covers Tanaga, Amchitka and Kiska.
