WWII Timeline

Events On This Day

Russian Front. Repeated heavy attacks by Wehrmacht ground forces continued against Stalingrad were repulsed by Russian defenders. On Rzhev front Russians made some limited progress.

In the Indian Ocean. British forces occupied the port of Tulear in Madagascar.

In Australasia. In the Owen Stanley area of New Guinea British ground force troops launched an outflanking attack on the enemy.

Eighth Air Force. United States pilots who had been members of 3 The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Eagle Squadrons are taken over by VIII Fighter Command and organised into 4th Fighter Group.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit harbour installations at Suda Bay. P-40 fighters fly offensive sweep over battle area, and carry out interception mission against Stukas Ju 87 over front-line near 11 Alamein.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb antiaircraft positions at Buna and airfield at Salamaua. A single A-20 Havoc light bombers bombs Menari area.

Eleventh Air Force. Morning armed reconnaissance mission is flown by an LB-30 bomber over Semichis and Attu. It strafes a ship at Attu. 3 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb and strafe sea transport, scoring no hits.
