Events On This Day

Russian Front, Russian drive into the Ukraine continues. On the Leningrad front units of General Meretskov had, a local success on the west bank of the Volkhov River. Russians admitted recapture by the Wehrmacht of Theodosia, in the Crimea.

In Africa, Field Marshall Erwin Rommel's Libyan advance continued, the spearhead of the attack reaching a point only 60 miles from Derna.

Far East, Japanese massing for assault on Singapore. In Burma stiff fighting along the ,line of the Salween River. In the Philippines another heavy attack on General MacArthur's position was beaten off with heavy losses to the enemy. Further Japanese reinforcements landed on the island of Amboyna. American aircraft sunk two enemy transports off Balik Papan.

The Egyptian cabinet resigned. Berlin announced that Hermann Göring had been in Italy for a week. He visited many units of the Luftwaffe and conferred with Mussolini and the King of Italy.

Hawaiian Air Force. VII Interceptor Command is activated in Hawaii, with General Davidson as commander. General Hale commands VII Bomber Command.
