Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers carried out extensive raids on Essen and the Ruhr again raided by strong force.

In the Mediterranean. Pantellaria and Cagliari raided by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers.

In Africa. British armoured forces occupied Tamar, West of Knightsbridge.

In Burma. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers attacked Oyster Island, off Akyab.

In Australasia. Allied airmen raided Rabaul, Tulagi and Atamboea in Timor.

Five Luftwaffe aircraft shot down over Southeast England.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb dock and military camp area at Rabaul.

Seventh Air Force. 6 of 16 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers that have been on detached service at Midway return to Oahu.

Zone of Interior. Aircraft and crews of 97th Bomber Group, then in New England for movement to United Kingdom, are ordered to West coast as defensive measure again attack on United States.
