Events On This Day

United States of America. Navy Department. Announced that American submarines had sunk seven enemy ships in Far Eastern waters.

In Egypt. By dawn a lane was breached in the Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's Afrika Corps minefield for British armoured formations to advance.

Russian Front. The evacuation of Nalchik in the Caucasus was announced by the Russians.

In Australasia. In New Guinea Allied forces recaptured Kokoda. Japanese ground forces managed to land fresh reinforcements on Guadalcanal.

Eighth Air Force. Commanding General VIII A Support Command states that the effort expended and personnel lost in organising Twelfth Air Force and preparing for its move from United Kingdom to North Africa has severely retarded organisation of his Headquarters and staff.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). British Eighth Army opens assault (SUPERCHARGE) West of Tell el-Eisa, with 2d New Zealand Division in lead. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb track extending South from Rahman as British 9th Armoured Brigade establishes bridgeheads across the track. Other B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack tanks and other targets in support of the assault. P-40s fly escort and strafing missions in battle area. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb shipping and jetties in Tobruk harbour.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb Dili. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers attack shipping Northeast of Buna while B-25 Mitchell medium bombers strike at convoy South of New Britain. In Owen Stanley Range, Australian ground forces seize Kokoda with its airfield after long days of fighting. This will greatly facilitate supply and reinforcement of troops in this area as they push over the mountains toward Buna-Gona area.
