Events On This Day

Four hundred Allied fighters and strong formation of British Royal Air Force and United States of America bombers made daylight sweep over Northern France. The British Royal Air Force made a heavy night raid on Krefeld and other Rhineland towns.

Russian Front. Large Wehrmacht ground forces attacks repelled by Russians defenders, who made some limited progress in one sector at Stalingrad.

In Burma. United States of America bombers destroyed railway bridge on Myitkyina line.

In Australasia. Japanese air force bombers, raided Guadalcanal in the Solomons.

M. Edouard Herriot, former French Premier, arrested by Vichy government.

Eighth Air Force. Avions Potez aircraft factory at Meaulte is bombed by 30 B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers. A small group attacks Saint Omer Longuenesse airfields. Some 400 fighters escorts provide cover which is frequently penetrated by Luftwaffe fighters. The B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers show remarkable defensive strength.

Fifth Air Force. In Owen Stanley Range, A-20 Havoc light bombers bomb and strafe Japanese camp sites around Myola and hit several trails in the area, while P-400 fighters strafe bridges at Sirorata and Wairopi and village Northeast of Wairopi. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb shipping and airfields at Rabaul.

Sixth Air Force. Kriegsmarine U-boat, U-512, is sunk off French Guiana, 06-50N, 52-25W, by aircraft of 99th Bomber Squadron

Eleventh Air Force 11 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and 6 P-39 fighters bomb 2 cargo ships at Kiska Harbour (no hits observed) drop demolition charges throughout Main Camp area, and hit hangar South of seaplane ramp. 4 float-planes and 1 biplane are shot down. Enemy aircraft bomb Adak airfields without inflicting damage.
