Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers carried out a major strike during the night on Karlsruhe.

Russian Front. After stubborn fighting the Russians withdrew in one sector of the Stalingrad front.

In Australasia. Japanese increased their attacks in Kokoda area of New Guinea.

Twelfth Air Force. Colonel Claude E Duncan becomes Commanding Officer XII Bomber command.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit docks and jetties at Tobruk harbour. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb aircraft and landing ground and, with The British Royal Air Force (RAF), attack troops and vehicles in battle area around Alam-el-Halfa ridge. P-40 fighters fly escort and sweep missions over battle area in conjunction with The British Royal Air Force (RAF).

Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters hit barges and junks carrying rice in the Poyang Bake region, strafe Headquarters and runways at Nanchang airfield, attack railroad stations and warehouses at Hua Yuan, and sink a launch, damage 4 junks, and wreck a train on Wuchang Peninsula.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-400 fighters bomb and strafe forces in Kokoda and Alola areas as Japanese continue to push toward Port Moresby.

South Pacific (SOPAC). The mission of the 67th Fighter Squadron P-400 fighters on Guadalcanal is shifted from air defence to close support for Marine ground forces and attacks on shipping, tasks for which they are better suited.

Eleventh Air Force 6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) bombers and 12 P-38 Lightning fighters fly cover and photo reconnaissance over Nazan and Kuluk Bays, and Amchitka and Semisopochnoi Island.
