Events On This Day

Light coastal forces were active during night in North Sea and Channel, and had three brushes with enemy.

Day raids over Northern France, including St. Omer.

Russian Front. The Wehrmacht ground forces threat to Stalingrad railway becoming more acute. Russian resistance stiffening along River Don.

In Africa. Bombs on outskirts of Cairo. Lull in desert fighting continued.

In Australasia. Japanese bombers attacked Port Hedland (West Australia). Large formations of aircraft attempting to raid Darwin were completely broken up.

Nine enemy bombers destroyed during widespread night raids.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). During 30-31 July 1942, B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb convoy in Pylos Bay claiming hits on 2 merchant ships. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit Tobruk harbour.

Tenth Air Force. The Japanese send about 120 aeroplanes against the base at Hengyang from which Chine Air Task Force (CATF) is harassing the Yangtze Valley. The attacks last about 36 hours. Fierce opposition by United States P-40 fighters prevents major damage to the base. 17 Japanese aircraft are shot down, 4 of them at night. 3 P-40 fighters are lost.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers attack shipping in Solomon Sea East of Huon Gulf and South of New Britain.

South Pacific (SOPAC) United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers of 11th Bomber Group begin arriving at Espiritu Santo where they are to constitute a reconnaissance and strike force over Guadalcanal-Tulagi-Gavutu area in preparation for amphibious assault by United States marines Marines on Guadalcanal on 7 August 1942.

Eleventh Air Force. 1 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) LB-30 bombers, 3 B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and 3 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers fly photo reconnaissance and bombing missions to Tanaga and Kiska. Missions are unsuccessful due to weather.
