Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers carried out the biggest attack of war to date, raided Cologne and the Ruhr with more than 1,000 bombers.

Russian Front. Soviet High Command announced success of Russian attack at Kharkov in forestalling the Wehrmacht attack.

In Africa. The Wehrmacht made two gaps in minefield west of Knightsbridge.

In Burma. United States of America heavy bombers again raided Myitkyina Aerodrome.

In the Indian Ocean. Japanese submarines attacked harbour of Diego Suarez, Madagascar.

In Australasia. Allied bombers made night attacks on Lae Kupang and Dilli.

Forty four Czechs including 10 women were executed in Prague.

Lieut General F. N. Mason MacFarlane appointed governor and Commander-In-Chief of Gibraltar.

During conferences with Air Chief Marshal Portal, General Arnold presents Programme of Arrival of United States Army Air Forces in the United Kingdom providing for 66 combat groups, exclusive of observer squadrons, by March 1943.

Tenth Air Force. Myitkyina is again hit by heavy bombers. Again no activity is observed and the attacks are discontinued.

Seventh Air Force. Seventh Air Force begins flying B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers from Oahu to Midway in face of expected attack on that island.
