The British Admiralty announced the loss of the destroyer HMS Veteran which was sunk on 26 September 1942 after being attacked by the U-404.

3 British Royal Navy sailors from HMS Petard board Kriegsmarine U-boat U-559 as it sinks in the Mediterranean and manage to retrieve its Enigma machine and code books before it sinks taking lives of two of the three sailors who boarded from HMS Petard.

In Egypt. The Australian 9th Division attacks once again in the coastal sector, extending to the sea during the night of 30-31 October 1942 and promptly turning west so as to envelop immense enemy forces in a pocket; but the Afrika Corps forces are freed by an armoured thrust and are able to withdraw towards Cyrenaica.

In Australasia. It was announced that Japanese surface fleet had retired from the battle of the Solomons Islands. United States of America ground forces held all their ground on Guadalcanal,

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Maleme airfield. 1 heavy bomber bombs main jetty in Suda Bay. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack landing grounds at Fuka-Bagush and El Daba. P-40 fighters fly escort. British Eighth Army sends 9th Australian Division North to the sea and then East, trapping large force in pocket, as Allied aircraft provide excellent support. Enemy tanks breaking through from West, however, enable most of the surrounded force to escape.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb harbour and shipping at Buin.

Eleventh Air Force. 1 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers twice flies reconnaissance over Kiska and Agattu. No bombing mission as all bombers are on alert for possible navy targets.
