Events On This Day

Russian Front. The Wehrmacht ground forces made advances in factory district of Stalingrad however the Russians defenders put up a valiant defence.

In Africa. Preceded by artillery barrage, British ground forces opened limited attack on the Egyptian front. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers carried out an intensive heavy bombing raid on Tobruk.

United States of America. United States heavy bombers attacked Japanese surface ships in Kiska harbour, Aleutians.


Twelfth Air Force. General Dunton assumes command of XII Air Force Services Command (AFSC).

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, A-20 Havoc light bombers, and P-40 fighters pound occupied areas at Menari, Myola Lake, Kagi, and Efogi and bridge at Wairopi.

Eleventh Air Force. Of 9 the United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers off to bomb Kiska and Attu, 2 turn back. The others blast Attu Camp area, and at Kiska Harbour score at least 1 direct hit and near misses on a ship. 8 fighters intercept over Kiska and Little Kiska but inflict no losses.
