Events On This Day

Russian Front. The Wehrmacht claimed Southern advance to be within 15 miles of Stalingrad. Russians gained more ground in Kletskaya area.

In Africa. Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's forces launched attacks on 8th Army southern flank in El Hemeimat area.

In Australasia. Allied Headquarters announced withdrawal of Japanese troops from Milne Bay, Papua, with heavy losses, Severe fighting in Kokoda area. The United States of America. Navy Department. Announced that the aircraft carrier Saratoga was damaged by torpedoes from Japanese submarine.

Twelfth Air Force. XII Bomber Commands is assigned to Twelfth Air Force with Headquarters at High Wycombe.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack aircraft on a landing ground, and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers raid harbour at Tobruk. P-40 fighters of 66th Fighter Squadron, 57th Group, escort The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers during raid on Maryut. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, in conjunction with The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Bostons, attack troop concentrations and military vehicles as battle of Alam-el-Halfa begins along the El Alamein line.

Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) medium bombers from China bomb Myitkyina for second consecutive day.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers and A-20 Havoc light bombers bomb airfield at Lae. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb ammunition dump at Buna. P-400 fighters strafe positions at Wairopi and P-40 fighters bomb landing barges and strafe gun positions in Milne Bay area where Australian ground forces now take the offensive.

Eleventh Air Force. Of 2 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers flying weather, reconnaissance and patrol missions over Tanaga, 1 returns due to weather.
