Events On This Day

The British Admiralty announced that in naval engagement in northern waters, enemy cruiser and destroyer were seriously damaged.

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) heavy bombers carried out an intensive raid over West Germany.

North Africa. Allied aircraft bombed Sfax, Susa and Gabés; enemy bombers raided Casablanca.

In Libya. Fighting French from Chad routed enemy motorised column in the Fezzan. French planes bombed enemy aerodrome near Murzuk.

In Burma The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers raided aerodrome at a Shwebo and port of Akyab causing extensive damage.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, including The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Liberators, bomb shipping and dock area at Sfax with good results.

Twelfth Air Force. Light bombers, with fighters escort, make 2 attacks on Sousse, bombing railroad yards and docks. Escorted B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit harbour at Sfax while B-26 Marauder medium bombers, with fighters protection, hit airfields area at Gabes and shipping and rail bridges in Bizerte-Tunis area. P-38 Lightning fighters and P-40 fighters, flying reconnaissance, destroy several vehicles. Other fighters fly routine patrols and escort C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft on transport missions.

Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters on armed reconnaissance hit railroad targets from Naba to Pinbaw. A-20 Havoc light bombers strafe forces in Sanananda and Giruwa area and along Amboga River. B-26 Marauder medium bombers pound forces on North shore of Markham River near its mouth, while A-20 Havoc light bombers strafe parked aircraft at Lae. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers operating singly, bomb airfields at Gasmata and attack shipping in Wide Bay and Saint George Channel.

South Pacific (SOPAC). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers of 69th Bomber Squadron arrive on Guadalcanal.

Eleventh Air Force. 6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, covered by 9 P-38 Lightning fighters, attack Kiska Harbour, hitting 2 cargo vessels. 1 of 6 intercepting fighters is probably shot down. 1 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers searching for a Navy aircraft missing since the previous day also flies reconnaissance over Semisopochnoi, Segula, Little Sitkin, Gareloi, and Amchitka.
