Events On This Day

Russian Front, Kuibishev announced that Russian troops in the Southern Ukraine had broken through the Wehrmacht lines and were pressing forward. Red Army troops reported within 37 miles of Dnepropetrovsk.

Far East, An Army communique from Rangoon announced that our forces had evacuated Moulmein, In Malaya, British forces were withdrawn from the mainland on to Singapore Island and the causeway over the Johore Strait was breached. Tokyo announced that their forces had captured Sambas, in Dutch Borneo, after a successful landing. Amboyna heavily shelled and bombed.

General Eaker is designated Commanding General, Bomber Command, United States Army Forces in the British Isles (USAFBI) and ordered to proceed to United Kingdom.
