Events On This Day

North Africa. Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's Afrika Corps carried out another counter-attack however it was repulsed near Tebourba. Bizerta docks and Tunis airfield raided by Allies.

In Australasia. Allied airmen shot down 23 Japanese fighters and drove off naval convoy attempting to reinforce Buna-Gona area of New Guinea. Off Guadalcanal, United States of America aircraft scored hits, on two Japanese surface cruisers and one destroyer.

It was announced that defence pact between United States of America and Liberia was signed on 31 March 1942.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit docks and shipping at Bizerte harbour. 2 of the escorting P-38 Lightning fighters are shot down by Me 109's. DB-7 Douglas Boston light bombers, with P-38 Lightning fighters as escort, bomb El Aouina airfield. Spitfires and P-38 Lightning fighters fly patrols and photo reconnaissance over wide areas of North West Africa, and carry out fighters sweeps during which several ground targets, including Gabes airfield, are attacked. British First Army withdraws from Tebourba as German forces, through continuous attacks, occupy the city during 3-4 December 1942.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers, P-400 fighters, and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb and strafe Sanananda Point and Buna areas and attack small torpedo boat in Dyke Acland Bay. A lone B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers attacks Kriegsmarine U-boat 75 miles Southeast of Rabaul. During 3-4 December 1942, B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb airfields at Lae and Salamaua. United States roadblock on Soputa-Sanananda trail remains precarious as Japanese maintain attacks from all sides and hold on reinforcements.

Eleventh Air Force. 2 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) bombers and several fighters fly reconnaissance over Semichis, Kiska and Attu. Constant air alert in Adak.
