Events On This Day

The British Admiralty announced that ships lost in Malta convoy attacks in June were the cruiser HMS Hermione was sunk on 16 June 1942 by U-205, destroyers HMS Bedouin was sunk on 15 June 1942 by a torpedo from an Italian aircraft, HMS Hasty was sunk on 15 June 1942 by a Kriegsmarine torpedo boat S-55, HMS Grove was sunk on 15 June 1942 by U-77. And HMS Airedale was sunk on the 15 June 1942 by Luftwaffe Ju-87 (Stuka) dive bombers and Polish destroyer Kujawiak was sunk on 16 June 1942 after being struck by a mine off the coast of Malta. Australian destroyer HMAS Nestor was scuttled on 16 June 1942 after being attacked by Italian aircraft on the 15 June 1942 in the eastern Mediterranean.

Russian Front. Evacuation of Sevastopol announced by Russians, large-scale Wehrmacht attacks at Kursk, Bielgorod and Volchansk.

In Africa. Our forces counter attacked in El Alamein area.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack Tobruk harbour during daylight hours and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb supplies at Tobruk during 3-4 July 1942.

Tenth Air Force. Chine Air Task Force (CATF) aeroplanes bomb and strafe airfields at Nanchang, the probable base of the preceding night's raiders on Hengyang. Several parked aircraft are destroyed. During the night Japanese aeroplanes again strike at Hengyang and once more fail to hit airfields.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers attack barracks area at Koepang and airfield at Lae. 1 A-24 bombs Tulagi.

Eleventh Air Force. 7 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and 2 B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb Kiska and Near Island, encountering neither fighters opposition no antiaircraft. Results not observed.
