in triangle Tebourba-Djedaida-Mateur.
In the Mediterranean. United States
of America Liberators bombers bombed Naples by daylight without loss, doing much
damage to warships and port.
In Libya. Allied heavy bombers raided Tripoli
Russian Front. Russian offensive continued inside and outside
Stalingrad against the Wehrmacht ground forces.
In Burma. The British
Royal Air Force (RAF) and United States of America bombers raided Japanese shipping
and supply columns.
Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force
(USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb shipping and docks at Bizerte.
B-26 Marauder medium bombers, with fighters escort, attack the same target a half
hour later. P-38 Lightning fighters, F4U Corsair fighters, and a B-17 Flying Fortress
heavy bombers fly reconnaissance, while P-38 Lightning fighters attack vehicles
and troop concentrations, mainly in Gabes and Sfax areas.
Ninth Air Force.
United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, in first attack
by United States bombers on Italy, hit Italian fleet and docks at Naples. Hits
are scored on numerous harbour installations, a railroad yard, and 3 or 4 ships,
including a battleship.
Eleventh Air Force. 7 United States Army Air
Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and 9 B-26 Marauder medium bombers
escorted by 16 P-38 Lightning fighters take off upon a PBY report of surface force
Southeast of Amchitka. At interception point, area is searched without result.
PBY pilot later reports he saw clouds. Reconnaissance is flown over Attu, Agattu,
Semichi, Kiska, and Amchitka. Go To: 5th
