Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers attacked Le Havre and enemy convoys off Dutch Coast. Night raids on Stuttgart, Skoda works at Pilsen, and Nantes docks.

Russian Front. Russians report offensive battles in some sectors, The Wehrmacht report large scale air battles on Kerch Peninsula.

In Burma. Japanese attack Paoshan on Burma Road. United States bombers attacked Mingaladon aerodrome, Rangoon.

In Philippines. Heavy air and artillery attacks on Corregidor, further Japanese landings in Mindanao.

In Australasia. Naval engagement between United States and Japanese, resulting in sinking of 8 Japanese warships and damage to others.

The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) airmen stated to be operating in Iceland.

The Germans announce shooting of 72 Dutchmen for pro-British activities.

Sharp Luftwaffe raid on two Southeast coast towns.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb Vunakanau airfield at Rabaul. P-39 fighters and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit airfields at Lae.

South Pacific (SOPAC). Battle of the Coral Sea begins with United States carrier based air attack on Tulagi.
