Events On This Day

Russian Front. The Russian defenders of Stalingrad repulsed six extensive Wehrmacht ground forces attacks. The Russian situation continues unchanged.

In the Indian Ocean. In Madagascar British troops occupied, Antsirabe.

In Australasia The Australians continued to advance along the Port Moresby Kokoda track. United States of America ground force patrols carried out reconnaissance on another island track near Jaure.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters strafe forces and occupied areas at Myola Lake, Kokoda, Wairopi, Yodda, and Buna. United States reconnaissance party from 126th Infantry, 32d Division reaches Jauri, completing reconnaissance of Kapa Kapa-Jauri trail, which is found to be difficult but practicable for use as a route in contemplated offensive against Buna-Gona area.

Eleventh Air Force. 3 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers abort weather, bombing and photo missions over Kiska due to weather and instead attack a cargo vessel. Ship's rudder is probably damaged. 1 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers is damaged.
