Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers carried out an intensive attack on Duisburg.

Russian Front. Russians made further withdrawals at Kotelnikovo and Byelaya Glina. At Rzhev Russians gained ground.

In Africa. Land activity confined to A artillery exchanges. United States of America Army Air Force bombers raided Tobruk.

In China. American bombers attacked Japanese aerodrome at Tienho, near Canton.

In Australasia. Japanese announced that their units had occupied the Kei, Aru and Tenimber Islands between Timor and New Guinea. Allied bombers started day and night raids on Japanese bases in New Guinea and the Solomons.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit harbour at Tobruk.

Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Tien Ho airfield, causing heavy damage to the runways and destroying several parked aeroplanes.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and B-26 Marauder medium bombers pound airfields at Lae and Salamaua.

Eleventh Air Force. 3 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 2 B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, and 10 P-38 Lightning fighters. Provide air coverage for Navy tenders to Nazan Bay. Photo reconnaissance is flown over Attu.
