Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers made heavy attacks on port of Emden.

Russian, Front. The Wehrmacht's ground forces continued attacks on Sevastopol repelled

In the Mediterranean. Nine enemy aircraft shot down over Malta. Messina raided.

In Africa. British armoured units reached Harmat. Two attacks on Bir Hacheim repelled by Free French.

In China. In Chekiang Japanese Fosters occupied airfield outside Chuhsien.

In the Pacific. Admiral Chester W. Nimitz announced that Japanese losses of Midway Island were two or three aircraft carriers lost with all aircraft, three battleships damaged, four cruisers and three transports damaged.

Execution of 13 more Czechs announced.

Seventh Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers maintain search out of Midway. 6 of the heavy bombers mistakenly attack United States submarine, which later reports no damage. More B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers arrive on Midway from Oahu.

Eleventh Air Force. Various bomber search attack missions are flown in an attempt to contact the fleet reported near Seguam Island. No contact is made due to weather. 8 P-38 Lightning fighters en route from Cold Bay to Umnak mistakenly attack a USSR freighter. Japanese begin to land on Kiska.

Zone of Interior. Aircraft and pilots of 1st Pursuit Group at Morris Field return to Dow Field, following defeat of Japanese fleet in Battle of Midway.
